Chapter Seventeen

Kara, Gracia, and I were sitting on the floor of the pet shop Monday afternoon, Kiwi walking around on the floor next to us. “Are you sure he won't eat the cards?” Kara asked, skeptical. She lifted her hand away from him, just as he went to nibble on them.

I nodded to Rocky, who was perched out of his crate on one of the giant wood stands I'd gotten. “He could probably eat the cards.”

Kara gave him a wary glance. Melon’s cage door was open, but she didn't feel like going outside and was currently bathing herself in her giant water dish.

“Your birds are interesting,” Gracia muttered.

“I think that's a compliment,” I said hopefully, in case the birds took offense.

She rolled her eyes. Kiwi came up and crawled up on my leg, perching on my knee. He did the clicky thing with his tongue, and I used one hand to scratch his neck.

“Good good?” he asked.

We were playing poker, which it turned out I wasn't very good at.

I shrugged. “We'll see,” I told him.

“Your hand sucks,” Walter said helpfully. From the way neither of the others reacted, it was probably just me that could hear. How kind of him. He seemed completely recovered from any sort of trauma that had been caused by the poltergeist.

“Thanks for your input,” I muttered.

When I looked back up, Kara and Gracia were staring at me. “We have an audience?” Gracia looked around.

“Walter’s commentating.” I gave him a pointed look.

Understanding dawned on Kara's face. Then she turned back to the game.

“Hold or draw?” she asked me.

I glanced at my cards. Draw. I slid one card towards her, and took another one from the pile. Yeah, it didn't really help. Still, I felt like I’d done something. I also set an extra chip – supplied by Gracia – into the middle.

“Interesting,” Kara said, her eyes sparkling. She would've made a good blackjack dealer. Too bad she cooked.

My phone started ringing, drawing my attention. Sighing, I looked at the number and froze. I closed my eyes, and then opened them again, answering and putting it to my ear.

“This is an automated phone call informing you that your child, Taylin, has missed periods one through three. If this is an excused absence, please send her with a note.” The message continued droning on, but I hung up. I put my phone on my forehead, suddenly no longer feeling like poker. I had a decent idea where to find her, and it wasn't at home.

“I gotta go,” I said.

Kara looked at me, frowning, and then her gaze softened. “Taylin?” Gracia’s expression mimicked hers at her words. I nodded.

“I'll be back.” Taylin deserved privacy, and I wasn't going to talk about her issues in front of my friends, even though they cared. Taylin was only 11, but she had a right to privacy.

It took me a few minutes to figure out where the cemetery was in the town, and more importantly, where Haidra had been buried. I'd only been there once at the funeral, and it'd been a few months ago.
